I use a small lathe to create  pens from a wide variety of materials. It is amazing what interesting grain lies below the surface of elk antler, bowling balls and exotic as well as domestic woods. I am at times unsure what kind of wood it is, however Great looking pens just appear.

My main approach to making bowls is to utilize a large commercial lathe, which allows me to make a variety of shaped bowls both large and small, from many kinds of wood both domestic & imported. Of course the size and type of bowl is usually determined before we start creating the piece, however most often the material determines the end product's shape and size.
